Zulum warns: FG

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has made a compelling appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging a reconsideration of the decision to merge the Army University in Biu, Borno State, with the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). This proposed merger comes as part of the Federal Government’s effort to streamline costs, following recommendations outlined in the Steve Oronsaye report. However, Zulum expressed deep concerns regarding the potential consequences of scrapping the university, particularly in light of the ongoing struggle against the Boko Haram insurgency in the region.

Addressing reporters while distributing relief materials to 100,000 households in Maiduguri, Governor Zulum emphasized the significance of preserving the Army University. He highlighted the crucial role education plays in areas like Borno, where Boko Haram vehemently opposes educational advancement. Zulum fears that dismantling the university could inadvertently serve the interests of the insurgents, allowing them to further hinder educational development in the region, thus perpetuating their agenda of ignorance and violence.

In his plea to President Tinubu, Governor Zulum underscored the vital importance of the university not only to the people of Borno State but also to neighboring regions affected by the protracted crisis. He proposed alternative solutions, such as maintaining the institution as an Army university or transitioning it into a conventional university under the Federal Ministry of Education’s oversight. Zulum’s appeal reflects a deep-seated commitment to education as a cornerstone of resilience and progress in the face of adversity.
