The bustling Wuse market in Abuja resumed operations on Friday, marking its return to business as usual after a tumultuous period of violence spurred by the tragic killing of a hawker. The incident had sent shockwaves through the community, leading to a temporary closure of the market as authorities worked to restore order and ensure the safety of vendors and patrons alike.

In the wake of the violence, significant damage was reported, with approximately 10 shops ravaged by fire and eight vehicles, including a police van and one belonging to a correctional facility, set ablaze. Innocent Obiechina, the Public Relations Officer of the Abuja Market Management Limited (AMML), confirmed to Daily Trust that the market resumed operations around midday on Friday, following extensive discussions among stakeholders.

Obiechina explained that the decision to reopen the market was the culmination of ongoing dialogues between various parties, which concluded with a meeting at the office of the FCT police commissioner, CP Bennett Igwe, on Friday. Among the factors taken into consideration during these discussions were concerns regarding security and the economic impact of the prolonged closure. Ultimately, stakeholders, including traders associations and the market management, reached a consensus that the prompt reopening of the market was necessary to alleviate the hardships faced by vendors and prevent further adverse consequences for the community.
