Wike vs Fubara: NLC, TUC, NANS, and other groups rally in support of Rivers State Governor
In a notable development, organized labor has thrown its support behind Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State amidst the ongoing conflict with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Demonstrations led by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Labour Centres, ITC, Traders, and other groups took place on the streets of Port Harcourt, displaying solidarity with Fubara.
The political struggle for control over the structure of Rivers State has fueled a rift between Wike and Fubara.
This tension escalated when 27 lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly, loyal to Wike, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following threats of impeachment against Fubara.
The power struggle resulted in the resignation of about seven commissioners from their positions.
In an effort to address the crisis, President Bola Tinubu facilitated a peace deal between Wike and Fubara, culminating in an eight-point resolution.
Following Tinubu’s intervention, the State Assembly retracted the impeachment notice against Fubara, marking a pivotal moment in the resolution of the political turmoil in Rivers State.
