Wike

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike expressed concern over the deficiency of tracking equipment for security agencies operating in the nation’s capital, asserting his administration’s commitment to procuring drones for surveillance in border communities. Specifically, he criticized the FCT commands of the police and the Department of State Services for lacking even basic tracking devices, which he deemed essential for effective law enforcement. Wike conveyed these sentiments during an interaction with journalists on Thursday.

Highlighting the inadequacies within the security apparatus, Wike lamented, “It’s unfortunate to say this, that mostly the security agencies, in particular I will say, the police here, are not adequately equipped.” He revealed that neither the FCT Police Command nor the FCT Command of the Department of State Services possessed ordinary tracking devices, necessitating reliance on headquarters for such capabilities, which he deemed inefficient and impractical.

Moreover, Wike disclosed his administration’s efforts to address this equipment shortfall, stating that the Bureau of Public Procurement initially denied emergency procurement requests. However, following the President’s approval in January, prompted by recent abductions, plans were set in motion to acquire essential equipment for security agencies. Additionally, Wike outlined plans to augment security measures by procuring drones, especially for surveillance in challenging terrain and forested areas along the FCT boundaries. He affirmed that these initiatives would be funded through the 2024 statutory budget, a move welcomed by the National Assembly during his briefing on Wednesday.
