President Bola Tinubu has officially inaugurated 17 federal commissioners of the National Population Commission, a selection made last November under his administration. The swearing-in ceremony, conducted in three groups comprising six, six, and five commissioners respectively, took place on Wednesday afternoon at the Council Chamber of the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
Initially, on November 8, 2023, President Tinubu appointed a total of 20 federal commissioners to the NPC, with nine being reappointed for a second term. Following this, on December 12, he forwarded the names of 19 of these nominees to the Senate for confirmation. However, only 17 nominees attended the Senate’s screening on February 24, 2024, and subsequently received confirmation.
The newly inaugurated commissioners, including Emmanuel Eke, Clifford Zirra, Chidi Ezeoke, and others, represent diverse states across Nigeria. Notably, two nominees from Ogun and Ondo were not screened due to their absence, attributed to recent political developments in their respective states. Amidst these proceedings, a minute’s silence was observed in honor of the late former Minister of State for Health, Gabriel Aduku, before the Federal Executive Council convened for its ninth meeting under the current administration.
