The police in Benue apprehend a ritualist along with his pregnant wife and 23 others
The Benue State Police have apprehended 25 individuals on charges spanning various offenses throughout the state.
Notably, among those arrested were a suspected spiritualist, accompanied by his pregnant wife, and five additional individuals who had traveled from Delta State to Benue State.
In a statement released on Wednesday and provided to journalists, SP Catherine Anene, the spokesperson for the state command, also disclosed that 15 individuals suspected of engaging in arms manufacturing were among those detained.
Furthermore, Anene reported that two additional individuals were apprehended in Mbakiya village, Ugondo District, Makurdi, the capital city, following a robbery incident involving one Misaq Eke.
The arrests reflect the police’s ongoing efforts to address various criminal activities across the state.
The statement indicated, “On 21/11/2023, at approximately 1900hrs, during a routine patrol along Barracks road, Makurdi, the police received information about the presence of one Godspower Oghenerumu, a suspected ritualist involved in cyber fraud (commonly known as ‘yahoo yahoo’), along with his pregnant wife and five associates, who had recently arrived in Makurdi from Delta State and were reportedly engaging in ritualistic activities.
In response to the information, the police team promptly proceeded to the location, apprehending the spiritual leader, his wife, and the five individuals involved in the alleged ritual activities.” The proactive response of the police underscores their commitment to maintaining law and order in the community.
“In the course of the investigation, the followers of the alleged ritualist revealed that they had previously engaged in ritual activities in Delta State, which unfortunately did not yield the promised financial gains. Subsequently, Godspower informed them that the spirit had directed them to relocate to Benue, where they would receive further instructions on the manufacture of money.
Moreover, on 15/11/2023, around 1620hrs, the police team successfully uncovered the hideout of arms dealers situated along Vandeikya-Adikpo Road, resulting in the apprehension of Fater Terkula Sunday and Jem Demesugh,” as stated by SP Catherine Anene, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police.
The arrests underscore ongoing efforts to address a range of criminal activities and maintain public safety within the state.
“A search conducted on the hideout immediately resulted in the discovery of six locally crafted barretta pistols and a motorcycle,” said the Public Relations Officer (PPRO).
The recovered items from the suspects’ possessions include a locally made barretta pistol, two gas cylinders, one welding cylinder, two welding nozzles, and a Sienna bus, indicating a range of potentially illicit activities and materials in their possession.
