Lagos Red Line Railway Project

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced that the Lagos Red Line Mass Transit rail system is projected to transport approximately 500,000 passengers daily once fully operational. The first phase of the project covers a distance of 27 kilometers from Agbado to Oyingbo, with eight stations strategically located along the route. Sanwo-Olu emphasized that beyond enhancing mobility, the Red Line aims to reshape the urban landscape of Lagos, fostering development and paving the way for a sustainable future.

The Lagos Red Line Mass Transit rail system can be significantly pointed out below as

  1. The first phase of the LRMT project is expected to facilitate 37 trips daily and move more than 500,000 passengers daily.

  2. The rail stretches over a distance of 27 kilometers.

  3. There are eight stations from Agbado in Ogun State to Lagos State – Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Yaba, before terminating at Oyingbo.

  4. 10 vehicular overpasses and pedestrian bridges have been constructed to separate train traffic from vehicular and pedestrian flows, ensuring smooth operation of the rail line and safety for commuters.

  5. The LMRT project is headed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority under the state’s Ministry of Transportation.

  6. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion, minimize road accidents, and improve commuter safety within Lagos.

  7. The Red Line will utilize a diesel-powered system known as Diesel Multiple Unit, which employs onboard diesel engines to propel multiple-unit trains.

  8. The Red Line project represents a substantial investment in Lagos’ urban transportation infrastructure, with initial estimates pegging the cost at $135 million under the Greater Lagos Urban Transportation Project, managed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).
