Super Eagles AFCON Camp Opens for 4th Title Bid

The Super Eagles‘ AFCON camp has commenced in Abu Dhabi, UAE, with Coach Jose Peseiro announcing a 25-player squad for the upcoming competition in Cote d’Ivoire starting in mid-January.

Most players, based in Europe, will join soon, except for Samuel Chukwueze, Francis Uzoho, William Troost-Ekong, and Sadiq Umar, who are permitted to play for their clubs before arriving on Wednesday.

Nigeria, placed in Group A with hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea, begins their AFCON journey against Equatorial Guinea on January 15th, followed by matches against Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau on January 19th and 22nd, respectively.

Despite a challenging start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, gathering only two points from games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, calls for Coach Peseiro’s dismissal have arisen.

However, Nigerian football authorities oppose such a move weeks before a major tournament.

While Peseiro faces pressure, he expresses optimism about the Super Eagles’ chances, emphasizing the tough competition within their group.

He believes in the team’s ability to secure another continental title, despite acknowledging the challenges posed by formidable opponents.
