Nigerian-born US Naval Officer, Michael Aregbesola, tragically lost his life in the Red Sea after falling overboard during an operation. Aregbesola was assigned to the “Swamp Foxes” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74 and was deployed aboard the USS Mason, which had been operating in the US 5th Fleet since November.
The US Navy confirmed Aregbesola’s death, praising his selfless character and warrior spirit. According to Cmdr. Eric Kohut, HSM-74 commanding officer, Aregbesola’s outstanding performance during deployment extended beyond aircraft maintenance, demonstrating his deep commitment to his team.
Aregbesola, a resident of Florida, joined the Navy in July 2020 and reported to HSM-74 in December of the same year. Despite facing years of unemployment in his native Nigeria, Aregbesola found opportunity in the US Navy, a journey he shared on social media shortly after his recruitment.
