Nigeria has expressed solidarity with Russia following the tragic attack at the Crocus Concert Hall in Moscow, extending heartfelt condolences to the Russian people and government. Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar conveyed Nigeria’s deep sympathy and prayers for the victims and their families, as well as for the swift recovery of the injured. The message reiterated Nigeria’s unwavering support for Russia during this challenging time, emphasizing the bond of brotherhood between the two nations.
The death toll from the attack has risen to 115, with Russian authorities announcing the arrest of 11 individuals, including four gunmen, allegedly involved in the assault claimed by the Islamic State. Despite the increased fatalities, President Vladimir Putin has yet to publicly address the incident, and the Kremlin has refrained from commenting on the Islamic State’s claim of responsibility. Speculation has arisen regarding a potential Ukraine connection to the attack, although Ukrainian officials have vehemently denied any involvement.
The assailants, clad in camouflage, opened fire at the crowded Crocus City Hall during a concert, resulting in the deadliest attack in Russia in over a decade. The FSB security service disclosed that some perpetrators had fled towards the Russia-Ukraine border, hinting at their alleged contacts in Ukraine. However, conclusive evidence linking the attack to Ukraine has not been provided, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that its fighters targeted a large gathering in Moscow’s outskirts before retreating safely to their bases. The attack sparked chaos and panic among concert-goers, with many succumbing to gunshot wounds and smoke inhalation. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities warning that the death toll is expected to rise further as recovery operations continue at the burnt-out venue.
