Lost N17.369trn: Anti-graft group cautions against ignoring Emefiele’s case
The Citizens Participation Against Corruption Initiative has appealed to the Federal Government, asking them not to overlook the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
The group held a press conference on Sunday at Katsina State Nigerian Union of Journalists premise, where they voiced their worries about the severity of corruption charges against Emefiele, calling for a fair and open inquiry.
The group’s Executive Director, Comrade Bishir Dauda, repeated the shocking claims detailed in the “Obazee Report.”
The report accused him of implementing policies without authorization, financial mismanagement exceeding N17.369 trillion, and potential ties to terrorism funding.
They warned against any efforts to trivialize these charges, stating that ignoring Emefiele’s trial would undermine public confidence in the anti-corruption campaign and foster a sense of impunity among senior officials.
The group praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for having the courage to order what they called an “historic probe” of the dismissed CBN Gvernor, and urged his administration to show its dedication to justice by enforcing and respecting the rule of law, and avoiding any influences or interference based on ethnic, religious, or political loyalties.
“As a civil society organization; we cannot remain silent or neutral in the face of this staggering corruption scandal. We therefore, fully concur with Mr. Bayo Onanuga, and other patriotic and well-intentioned Nigerians, as well as development partners and international community that the dismissed governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank, ‘Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele must face the consequences of the enormous allegations of wrongdoing leveled against him, including cases that concern treason, terrorism funding, violating CBN Act, self-enrichment and unlawful favoritism of associates, theft and outright looting, exposed by Jim Obazee, the special investigator,” the group proclaimed.
