Two top Boko Haram commanders have surrendered to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) after 15 years of conflict against the troops, according to Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, the MNJTF spokesperson. The surrendered commanders, identified as Ibrahim Muhammed and Auwal Muhammed, also known as WANKA, were affiliated with the Bakura Buduma faction and carried out attacks in various locations around Lake Chad.
The surrender was attributed to the intensified kinetic and non-kinetic operations by troops targeting terrorist groups within Sector 3 of the MNJTF. Both Muhammed and WANKA, during questioning, revealed their 15-year involvement with the Bakura Buduma faction, based in Kwallaram in the Lake Chad islands. The MNJTF recovered a significant cache of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, magazines, ammunition, hand grenades, handheld radios, and mobile phones, from the surrendered terrorists.
The surrendered fighters, who had been active commanders operating in the Lake Chad Islands, are now in custody for further investigation. The recovery of weapons underscores the significance of their surrender and represents a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in the region.
