The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has taken decisive action amidst the growing concerns regarding the declining power supply in Abuja and Ibadan. Summoning the chief executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, along with the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Sule Abdulazeez, Adelabu aims to address the worsening power situation in these regions.
Since the onset of this year, the nation has witnessed a significant deterioration in its power supply infrastructure. Factors contributing to this decline include mounting debts exceeding $1 billion owed to gas producers, essential for operating thermal gas-fired power plants. Additionally, incidents of vandalism targeting transmission towers have plagued various parts of the country, leading to grid disturbances and a recurrent drop in electricity transmission nationwide.
Expressing concern over these developments, Minister Adelabu, through a letter signed by the Director of Distribution Services at the Federal Ministry of Power, B.U Mustapha, has mandated the attendance of Discos and TCN leadership at an upcoming meeting. The purpose of this gathering is to engage in discussions aimed at resolving the pressing issues surrounding the worsening electricity supply in their respective regions, with the goal of devising lasting solutions.
