FCCPC Condemns Steep Rise in Sachet Water Prices

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has voiced strong disapproval regarding the recent surge in sachet water prices. Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, the commission’s acting Executive Vice-Chairman, expressed this sentiment during the commemoration of the 2024 World Consumer Rights Day in Abuja. The event centered on the theme of ‘Fair and Responsible Al for Consumers.’

Abdullahi emphasized that the price hikes initiated by various associations are unjustifiable and unfair to consumers. These associations, including the Association of Table Waters Producers of Nigeria, announced a significant increase in the price of sachet water, attributing it to elevated production material costs. Members of the association cited challenges such as high diesel expenses, inadequate power supply, and soaring production costs as contributing factors to the price surge, linking it to the country’s economic situation.

However, Abdullahi countered these justifications, asserting that the increase in sachet water prices is not warranted. Despite acknowledging rising costs of power, fuel, and packaging materials, he argued that most producers already possess the necessary machinery. He criticized the emergence of cartels within industries, condemning their practices of price fixing. Abdullahi pledged to take action against such cartels, emphasizing the FCCPC’s commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and preventing unfair market practices.
