Uganda's President Elevates Son to Military Chief

Uganda’s President, Yoweri Museveni, has appointed his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as the head of the country’s defence forces, as announced by the defence ministry late on Thursday. This move marks a significant milestone in Kainerugaba’s career, following years of speculation about his potential ascent to a top military position, amidst his controversial social media presence.

Despite Kainerugaba’s previous denials regarding succession intentions, his rapid rise through Uganda’s army ranks has fueled speculation about his future role. Last year, in a now-deleted social media post, Kainerugaba hinted at presidential ambitions for the 2026 elections, advocating for a generational shift in leadership and garnering mixed reactions.

However, his social media activities have also sparked diplomatic tensions, as seen in a 2022 incident where he threatened to invade Kenya, prompting Museveni to caution him against involving social media in state affairs. Despite controversies, Museveni has defended his son’s capabilities, referring to him as a “very good general” and promptly promoting him to that rank following the aforementioned row.

The appointment of Kainerugaba as the head of defence forces comes as part of a wider government reshuffle, with former army chief General Wilson Mbasu Mbadi reassigned to serve as the junior minister for trade. While some opposition figures have criticized the move, citing concerns about a family dynasty and national ownership, the promotion underscores ongoing discussions about succession and governance dynamics in Uganda.
