The Joint Action Committee comprising the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU ) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has issued a warning of potential disruption to university operations if the government does not promptly release withheld salaries. These salaries, withheld during the unions’ strike in 2022 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, remain unpaid.
In a joint letter signed by SSANU President Muhammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi on Friday, the unions expressed concern over the government’s selective release of salaries. While four months’ worth of withheld salaries were released to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, non-academic staff members have yet to receive their due payments.
The unions emphasized that without the release of these owed salaries, they cannot guarantee continued industrial peace in universities.
