Recognizing the constitutional rights of citizens to assemble and protest, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has established pro bono legal support services for individuals whose fundamental human rights might be violated during protests. This initiative underscores the NBA’s commitment to upholding citizens’ rights and ensuring legal protection against any potential abuses.
On Thursday, citizens across many states began protests demanding an end to bad governance in Nigeria. In response, NBA President Mr. Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), through the NBA National Publicity Secretary Akorede Lawal, announced that directives had been issued to all chairpersons of the NBA’s 130 branches. These directives emphasize the need to address any breaches of fundamental human rights experienced by protesters.
Mr. Maikyau also encouraged peaceful conduct among protesters and called on law enforcement agents to perform their duties professionally and with respect for human rights. To facilitate this, the NBA has set up situation monitoring committees to observe and report interactions between law enforcement and protesters. These committees are tasked with documenting any cases of harassment, intimidation, or torture.
To ensure effective coordination, the NBA has formed Legal Support Services teams led by key figures such as the 1st Vice President of the NBA, Mrs. Linda Rose Bala, and others. The NBA President has also sought collaboration with the Inspector General of Police. As the protests commence, the NBA urges both citizens and security agencies to exercise their rights responsibly and within legal boundaries.
