FG, UK Company Ink MoU for Port Harcourt–Abuja Rail Line

The Ministry of Transport recently announced a significant step towards enhancing Nigeria’s railway system. They’ve partnered with Messrs MPH Rail Development Limited, a company from the United Kingdom, for the Port Harcourt–Enugu–Calabar–Abuja Standard Gauge Rail Line project. This partnership operates under a public-private framework, aiming to improve the country’s transportation infrastructure.

This collaboration was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), as detailed in a statement released on the ministry’s website. According to the MoU, the UK firm will oversee various aspects of the project, including design, construction, commissioning, operation, and eventual transfer of the railway line.

The MoU signing follows the approval of the Outline Business Case and compliance certificate issuance by the Infrastructure, Concession, and Regulatory Commission. With this clearance, Messrs MPH Rail Development Limited can now focus on compiling necessary documentation for Federal Executive Council approval to move the project forward. The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, expressed full support for the initiative, stressing the importance of thorough preparation and submission of required documents for timely approval.
