Dozens Slain as Bandits Raid Nine Benue Communities

Bandits have unleashed terror on approximately nine communities in the Apa Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving a trail of death and destruction as they set houses ablaze. Reports indicate that the affected communities have been deserted, with surviving residents fleeing for their lives amid the ongoing attacks that commenced several days ago.

While some locals estimate the casualty figure at around 25, the lawmaker representing the area in the state Assembly, Abu Umoru, expressed difficulty in accurately determining the number of casualties due to the scale of the devastation. Umoru lamented that the attacks have resulted in the displacement of about 95% of the communities in the local government, including Edikpo, Opaha, Odugbo, Akpete, Ikobi, Akpata, Idiaha, Ochumekwu, and Adiga.

Describing the situation as dire, Umoru highlighted the atrocities committed by the bandits, including burning houses, laying ambushes, and perpetrating daily killings. He emphasized the severity of the crisis, noting that the violence has extended beyond the communities, affecting highways and impeding regular activities. Despite efforts by representatives in the National Assembly to address the escalating violence, the situation continues to deteriorate, leaving residents in a state of despair and helplessness.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the Benue State Police Command and the state government were unsuccessful. With no immediate relief in sight, the affected communities grapple with the devastating aftermath of the bandit attacks, while residents anxiously await intervention and assistance to restore peace and security to the region.
