Chinese National Sentenced to Death for Murdering Nigerian Girlfriend

A Kano-based High Court issued a death sentence by hanging for Chinese national Frank Geng-Quangrong, 47, who fatally stabbed his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, 22. Geng-Quangrong, a resident of Kano Railway quarters, faced conviction on a charge of culpable homicide. Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji, in delivering the verdict, affirmed the prosecution’s case, citing inconsistencies in the defendant’s testimony as he declared him guilty.

The prosecution, represented by Kano State Attorney-General Haruna Dederi, detailed that the convict committed the offense on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters, Kano. Throughout the trial, six witnesses, along with four exhibits, were presented, aligning with the provisions of Section 221(b) of the Penal Code. In defense, counsel Muhummad Dan’azumi sought mercy under Section 313 of ACJL, presenting the defendant’s testimony, where Geng-Quangrong claimed self-defense after the victim allegedly assaulted him.

Despite the plea for leniency, the court upheld the death penalty, emphasizing the gravity of the crime. The victim’s mother, Hajiya Fatima Zubairu, welcomed the verdict, hoping it would deter future acts of violence. The ruling underscores the commitment to justice and serves as a reminder of the consequences for those who unlawfully take lives.
